GARDEN CLUB NEWS
The Garden Club has been awarded a $10,000 grant by the Essex Foundation for the installation of a water tap in Dickinson Park. Here is an excerpt from their email to Club President Dagmar Miller:
"The Essex Foundation Board of Directors met yesterday and reviewed your request from the Essex Garden Club for funding assistance with the installation of a water tap at Dickinson Park.
I am pleased to inform you that the Board voted to approve this request. The Board greatly appreciates the Essex Garden Club’s hard work and dedication to enhancing the beauty of Dickinson Park and other locations throughout town, and they have asked me to extend our thanks for your valuable contributions to our community."
Congratulations to Dagmar Miller (Club President), Barbara Muhlfelder (Treasurer), Mara Johnson and Augie Pampel (Past President) for their work in obtaining these funds from the Essex Foundation.

CALLING SUSTAINING MEMBERS!
At the Annual Meeting in September, Sustaining Member Leslie Barlow offered to spearhead a Garden Club initiative to provide flowers to the Ivoryton Library (similar to how the Club provides flowers for the Essex Library). It was suggested that this might be an activity that Sustaining Members might enjoy. If you are interested in participating, please let Leslie Barlow know (860-767-0480; 860-304-3438) and she will add your name to the schedule.
Of course, any Active Members who want to participate are welcome to volunteer!

MESSAGE FROM OUR CONSERVATION LEAD, BEN McQUIRE
Looking for a gift idea this holiday season?
Give your family, friends and loved ones peaceful, quiet afternoons with the gift of an electric leaf blower. The detrimental effects of gas-powered leaf blowers and other landscaping equipment are now more well-known than ever, including nuisance noise levels (over 100 decibels), air pollution and climate impacts (use of a single gas leaf blower for half an hour is equivalent to driving a 6,200lb pick-up truck for 3,900 miles), and insect and other wildlife impacts. Although most landscaping companies still use gas-powered equipment, many garden club members have found that their landscapers are willing to use electric equipment provided by the homeowner. Recommended brands include Ryobi, EGO Power, and Milwaukee. Other landscaping tools are also available in eco-friendly, quiet electric models, including lawnmowers, string trimmers, and hedge trimmers (kits start at less than $300). Help the environment and the neighborhood!
