GARDEN CLUB NEWS:
More than 50 Club Members attended the Annual Meeting and Luncheon on Monday, September 9. Club President Dagmar Miller reported that 2023-2024 was an extremely successful year – both practically and financially – for the Essex Garden Club. In addition to the many beautification projects completed throughout the communities of Centerbrook, Essex and Ivoryton, the Club provided scholarships totaling $24,000 to seven area students who are pursuing studies related to the environment, plus $12,405 in scholarships for 50 children from the Essex communities to attend area environmental camps offered by The Incarnation Center, Camp Hazen and Essex Parks and Recreation. The Club also provides financial support to the Essex Library, the Ivoryton Library, the Essex Tree Town Committee, and the Ancient Order of Weeders.
Dagmar also reported that she and Mara Johnson recently met with the Town's Board of Selectmen (Norm Needleman, Stacia Libby and Bruce Glowac) and it was agreed that the Essex Garden Club should submit a grant application for $10,000 to the Essex Foundation for a source of water to be provided for the Town's Dickinson Park. Currently, plants located there are watered manually by Club members.
At the luncheon, it was announced that the Essex Garden Club had been inducted into Camp Hazen's Chairman's Round Table in recognition of our support over the years.
Sandy French received the President's Award in recognition of her participation and service to Horticulture and the Club, in general.
Pictures from the luncheon can be seen on the Photo Gallery page of the website
