Scholarships and Summer Camperships 2021-2022
Two college students received a scholarship of $2,000 each.
Nathaniel Hill, a 2021 graduate of Valley Regional High School was a recipient of a 2021 Essex Garden Club award of $1,500. Nathaniel will be a sophomore at the University of Vermont’s Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources. Nathaniel is majoring in Natural Resources and his interest is in species conservation and habitat.
Tabitha Hardgrove, a 2020 graduate of Valley Regional High School was a recipient of a 2020 Essex Garden Club award of $1,000. Tabitha will be a junior at the Rochester Institute of Technology, pursing a degree in Biology. Her interest is in biological research and looking for sources and cures for dangerous viruses and bacterial infections (of which many of these are found in the environment).
The Incarnation Center in Ivoryton, CT, which offers both the Bushy Hill Day Camp and the Pequot Sherwood Day Camp, was awarded $5,890 to assist 17 children from Essex, Ivoryton or Centerbrook attend one of their camps. These one-week sessions provide elementary and middle school students with full day, in-depth nature experiences. 2 students from John Winthrop Junior High School attended camp for two weeks. Additionally, Essex Parks and Recreation was awarded $2,200 to 16 children to attend their one-week camp. Camp scholarship recipients are need-based and anonymous.
These camp scholarships were partially funded by a $1,500 grant from Essex Savings Bank for the purpose of helping area youth attend summer camp.
