Scholarships and Summer Camperships 2019-2020
College scholarships totaling $5,000 were awarded to six students from Essex and Ivoryton:

  • Daniel Taylor of Ivoryton received $1,000. He attends Vassar College, where he is majoring in Biology with a focus on ecosystems and ecology. He is participating in a Wesleyan University research project during the summer to study the interaction between caterpillars and their predators.

  • Imogene Welles of Essex received $1,000. She is pursuing her Ph.D. in evolutionary biology at Stony Brook University, where she will continue researching the diet and morphology of small mammals to aid in understanding the impact of climate change. During the summer, she will work on the Tick Project at the Cary Institute in Millbrook NY to test environmental intervention ideas for preventing tick-borne illnesses.

  • Ruby O'Lynnger of Ivoryton, a 2020 VRHS graduate, received $1,000. She has been an instructor at the Incarnation Center's Nature's Playground since 2017 and will be counselor at Bushy Hill camp during the summer. She will attend the University of Vermont to study Biology.

  • Tabitha Hardgrove of Ivoryton, a 2020 VRHS graduate, received $1,000. She was named CT Conservation Ambassador after participating in the UCONN Natural Resources Conservation Academy on a project studying local water quality. She will attend Rochester Institute of Technology to study Biology.

  • Emma Carey of Essex, a 2020 VRHS graduate, received $500. She has been active as an Essex Parks and Recreation camp counselor for the last 4 years. She will attend the University of Delaware's College of Agriculture and Natural Resources

  • Celia Ghilani of Essex, a 2020 VRHS graduate, received $500. She has interned at Ashleigh's Garden and is looking forward to her studies in Environmental Engineering at Penn State University.

Summer camperships totaling $5,000 were given for 17 children from Essex, Ivoryton or Centerbrook to attend one week of camp at the Incarnation Center in Ivoryton, CT. This was made possible by a $5,000 grant received from the Kitchings Family Foundation for the purpose of helping area youth attend summer camp. The Incarnation Center, which encompasses both Bushy Hill Camp and Pequot Sherwood Camp, combined their programs into one this summer in order to meet the strict state guidelines imposed due to Covid 19.

The Essex Parks and Recreation Summer Camp program was cancelled due to Covid 19.

All camp scholarship recipients are need-based and anonymous.
